The scene includes a massive bull with a cold gaze, a tormented horse screaming in pain, and a mother cradling her dead child. Other figures include a fallen warrior with a broken sword, women trapped in flames, and a woman holding a kerosene lamp.
The horse has been read as a metaphor for the innocent victims of war, while the bull is often interpreted as Spain, Fascism, or brutal force. A fractured dove represents peace shattered by war, and a small flower near the warrior suggests the persistence of life.
Picasso used a monochrome palette of black, white, and gray, which evokes newspaper photographs and intensifies the drama by stripping away decorative distractions.
The painting became a powerful anti-war icon and a symbol of resistance to fascism. It is widely regarded as one of the most important artworks of the twentieth century, standing as a visual shorthand for the horrors of aerial bombardment.
