St John the Baptist

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci

1514

Scene

A half-length figure emerges from a deep, almost impenetrable darkness. The torso turns in a subtle spiral while the head inclines slightly toward the viewer.

Figures

The painting depicts Saint John the Baptist as a youthful figure with long, curly hair and a gentle smile. He is shown wearing only a rough fur garment, which traditionally refers to his life as an ascetic in the wilderness.

Symbolism

The upward-pointing right index finger is interpreted as an announcement of the coming Christ and directing attention to salvation. A reed cross held in the left hand identifies the figure and symbolizes Christ’s future Passion.

Craft

Leonardo uses sfumato, a technique of seamless, smoky transitions between light and shadow, to softly model the figure's features.

Impact

The work influenced later artists, especially in the late Renaissance and Mannerist schools, who borrowed its half-length format and upward-pointing gesture. Today it remains a central object of scholarly study and public fascination.
