The Fall of the Damned

Peter Paul Rubens

Peter Paul Rubens

1620

Scene

A mass of bodies plunges diagonally into a dark abyss. Archangel Michael appears in a burst of light at the top left. The chaotic composition uses a triangular arrangement to organize the fall.

Figures

Naked human bodies and grotesque demons tumble downward. Michael, clad in a blue tunic and red cloak, leads the angelic force. Some figures appear to be fallen angels losing their wings.

Symbolism

The work visualizes the terrifying fate of the damned at the Last Judgment. It also suggests the expulsion of the rebel angels from Heaven. Hybrid monsters visually align non-Christian beliefs with forces of damnation.

Craft

Rubens uses dramatic chiaroscuro to contrast heavenly light with infernal darkness. This sharp contrast heightens the emotional impact of the falling bodies.

Impact

The painting is a major example of Baroque religious imagery. It has been widely copied and studied for its composition. In 1959, it was attacked with acid by a vandal.
