The Holy Trinity

Masaccio

Masaccio

1426

Scene

The composition is organized vertically in three main zones within a barrel-vaulted chapel. At the top, sacred figures appear beneath an arch, while donors kneel on a ledge closer to the viewer. A skeleton in a sarcophagus lies at the very bottom.

Figures

God the Father stands behind the cross supporting Christ, with the Holy Spirit as a dove between them. The Virgin Mary and Saint John flank the cross, while a husband and wife kneel as donors in the foreground.

Symbolism

The Trinity represents the Throne of Mercy, showing the Father presenting the Son for salvation. The skeleton and inscription serve as a reminder of death, linking human mortality to the need for redemption.

Craft

Masaccio used one-point linear perspective to create a convincing illusion of depth. The architectural elements recede toward a single vanishing point, making the painted chapel appear to extend into the real church.

Impact

This fresco is considered a turning point in Western painting and a landmark of the Early Renaissance. It is widely cited as one of the first major works to use systematic linear perspective.
