The Last Supper
The painting depicts the dramatic moment after Jesus announces that one of his disciples will betray him. Christ sits calmly at the center while the apostles react with varied emotions of disbelief and anger. The composition is designed to visually extend the real dining room of the monastery.
Christ sits at the center in a stable triangular shape, flanked by the twelve apostles arranged in four groups of three. Judas is placed on the same side as the others but is set apart by his shadowed face and backward-leaning posture. Each apostle has a distinctive emotional and gestural identity.
Three windows behind Christ and his triangular pose are often linked to the Holy Trinity. Light from the central window frames Christ like a halo without using painted discs. Judas clutches a small bag that alludes to the silver he received for the betrayal.
Leonardo used an experimental technique of tempera and oil on a dry wall instead of traditional fresco. This allowed him to work slowly and rework details to achieve subtle modeling of flesh and expression. However, this method caused the surface to deteriorate quickly.
The work is considered a pivotal achievement of the High Renaissance for integrating perspective, architecture, and human psychology. It has profoundly shaped Western visual culture through countless copies and reinterpretations. Despite its damaged state, it remains a major pilgrimage site and key monument in Milan.
