The Resurrection

Piero della Francesca

Piero della Francesc...

1462

Scene

Christ stands frontally at the center, emerging from a classical stone sarcophagus. Four Roman soldiers lie sleeping at the base of the tomb in various attitudes of torpor. The landscape behind him is divided into barren trees on one side and leafy, fertile trees on the other.

Figures

Christ is shown with an idealized yet solid body, holding a white banner marked with a red cross. The sleeping soldiers at the base are rendered with convincing weight and overlapping forms. Tradition suggests the soldier in brown armor at Christ’s right is a self-portrait of the artist.

Symbolism

The white banner with a red cross is a traditional emblem of triumph over death and sin. The contrast between the barren and fertile landscape has been read as a visual metaphor for the passage from death to life. Christ’s direct frontal gaze is reminiscent of images of Christ Pantokrator, the cosmic judge.

Craft

The artist uses two distinct vanishing points to organize the scene, creating a subtle split between the earthly and divine viewpoints.

Impact

The fresco has been hailed as a masterpiece of early Renaissance painting for its fusion of geometry and spiritual intensity. Its renown reportedly played a role in persuading Allied forces to spare the town from bombardment during World War II.
