The Seven Sacraments Altarpiece

Rogier van der Weyden

Rogier van der Weyde...

1445

Scene

The artwork is set inside a spacious late Gothic church where the architecture runs continuously across all three panels. In the central nave, a monumental Crucifixion takes place, while the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church are enacted in the aisles and side chapels around it.

Figures

Christ on the cross towers above the congregation, accompanied by the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and other mourning followers who are larger than the other people to show their importance. The congregation includes richly dressed laypeople in contemporary fashion alongside a few poorer figures.

Symbolism

Angels hover above holding inscribed scrolls that explain how each sacrament derives its power from Christ’s Passion. A priest elevates the Host at the high altar, visually linking the celebration of the Mass to Christ’s sacrificial death.

Craft

The artist used oil on oak with fine glazing and layering to achieve luminosity and subtle flesh tones. This technique creates rich color and detailed textures characteristic of Early Netherlandish painting.

Impact

Art historians regard this work as a masterpiece and a key example of Early Netherlandish religious painting. It is considered a particularly ambitious synthesis of liturgy, theology, and narrative that remains a central object of study for understanding late medieval devotion.
