The Supper at Emmaus
Caravaggio
1511
Christ sits at the center of a small table while breaking and blessing bread. He is flanked by two disciples, with a standing innkeeper nearby. An empty space at the front of the table invites the viewer to join the meal.
Christ and two disciples react with dramatic gestures and expressions of awe at the moment of recognition. The standing innkeeper remains calm and shadowed, unaware of the miracle. Their life-size figures seem to share the viewer's physical space.
A basket of fruit and the wine suggest themes of sacrifice and resurrection. The wicker basket forms a fish shape, an early Christian symbol. Christ’s red and white garments allude to his Passion and Resurrection.
Caravaggio uses chiaroscuro, a strong contrast of light and dark, to model forms and focus attention on the revelation. Illuminated figures emerge from a dark background to create a dramatic, theatrical effect.
This work helped establish Caravaggio as a revolutionary painter in Rome. It challenged idealized traditions by presenting sacred stories with intense naturalism and ordinary details. The painting remains a widely discussed image of the Emmaus story.
