Scene

The Virgin Mary is seated on the ground in a twisted pose, with Joseph just behind her in a semi-squatting position. Their movements are deliberately ambiguous, suggesting they are passing the Christ Child back and forth.

Figures

The central figures are the Holy Family, accompanied by the young John the Baptist in the transitional zone and a group of nude youths in the background. Mary's bare, muscular arms and lack of a veil emphasize her physical strength.

Symbolism

The nude youths are interpreted as pagan humanity untouched by Christian revelation, while a low wall separates them from the Holy Family as a barrier of original sin. Christ's physical dominance over his parents is seen as signifying the New Testament superseding the Old.

Craft

Michelangelo used tempera and oil on wood panel, laying down intense dark colors first and modeling lighter tones over them to create deep, sculptural shadows.

Impact

It is the only fully finished panel painting by Michelangelo and became a benchmark for the 'modern manner' of the High Renaissance, influencing subsequent artists.
