The sitter is an elegantly dressed young man whose exact identity is unknown. His refined appearance and costly clothing suggest he belonged to the Florentine elite, possibly connected to the Medici milieu. He also holds a small portrait of a bearded saint painted in an earlier style.
The deep blue tunic suggests wealth and status, as high-quality blue pigments were expensive. Holding the saint’s image may signal the sitter’s devotion, family piety, or connection to a valuable heirloom. The roundel itself contrasts old and new, linking the sitter to spiritual and historical continuity.
The artist used a *repoussoir* device, positioning the hand and roundel to project over the ledge. This makes the objects appear to extend into the viewer’s space, blurring the boundary between the painting and the real world.
