The Last Judgment (Sistine Chapel)

Michelangelo

Michelangelo

1536

Scene

The composition centers on a powerful, muscular Christ figure whose twisting gesture organizes the entire scene. The lower portion depicts the resurrection of the dead rising toward paradise on the left, while the damned are cast into hell on the right.

Figures

Christ is positioned in the center with the Virgin Mary beneath his raised arm in a pose of acquiescence. Over 300 figures surround them, including saints holding the instruments of their martyrdom such as St. Bartholomew with his flayed skin.

Symbolism

Christ's raised arm simultaneously damns sinners to hell and draws the righteous upward to heaven. Saints hold instruments of their martyrdom, and symbols of Christ's passion like the cross and crown of thorns appear at the top.

Craft

Michelangelo used fresco painting on freshly laid lime plaster to create this monumental mural. The fresco angles outward at the top to prevent dust accumulation and improve perspective.

Impact

The work is regarded as one of Michelangelo's greatest masterpieces and remains one of the most audacious and controversial artistic statements in history. It profoundly affected viewers and plunged Renaissance Rome into a vision of cosmic reckoning.
