The Red Vineyard

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh

1888

Scene

The work shows grape harvesters laboring in a glowing, autumnal vineyard under a large low sun in a yellow sky. A reflective road or river-like strip on the right glistens with light.

Figures

Over twenty workers, many dressed in blue, are bent over or moving through the rows as they harvest the grapes. Their repetitive postures suggest long days of agricultural labor.

Symbolism

The blazing sun and saturated palette heighten a sense of both beauty and intensity in the labor. The red vineyard suggests wine and abundance, but also heat, strain, and the nearing end of the season.

Craft

Van Gogh used thick, impasto application of paint in the sun and sky, sometimes squeezing it directly from the tube and smoothing it with his fingers.

Impact

This painting is the only one definitively documented as sold during Van Gogh’s lifetime. It is regarded as a key canvas of his Arles period and an early masterpiece of expressive color.
